Hello! I'm a Stanford PhD student and I have tutored children from 4th-8th grade in math and reading. The subjects I've covered for math include addition and subtraction of negative numbers, order of operations, fractions, word problems, and prealgebra. I am also a member of Reading Partners (check them out!), a volunteer organization that works towards improving students' reading fluency and comprehension. As a tutor for Sylvan's Ace-It Program, I worked with a diverse range of students who were performing below grade level. As a doctoral student, I study the development of cognitive reasoning. I love working with adolescents and this is one of the reasons why I continue to tutor. Like most tutors, I like to first assess my students to gain an understanding of the skill level that I would be working with. However unlike other teachers, who may follow a purely linear trajectory, I take a psychologically real approach. We do not effectively learn for longevity by studying a topic all at once for a period of time. Instead, we thrive on interval learning in which there are clear spaces and deviations from the main topic at hand. This gives the brain time to refresh and at the later point of reintroduction, the student should be better able to draw inferences and conclusions about the subject matter.
