1999 Subaru Legacy wagon, AWD, manual, recent major service - $1,600

Price:
$1
Location:
Stanford, CA
Description:

Selling a '99 Subaru Legacy wagon with the ultra-durable 2.2l engine (99 was the last year it was made), all wheel drive and 5-speed manual transmission. Clean title. Smog check passed on 11/27. It's certainly not fancy but a great car for road trips, adventures, or as a workhorse, cheap to insure and maintain. Recent major service - see below. Comes with snow chains, phone adapter for the radio, USB charger etc. I'd love to keep the car but am selling because I'm moving to New York City where it's too much hassle to own one. With all wheel drive and M+S tires, the car handles great in the snow, is free from chain requirements and has a large even loading area. It's comfortable to sleep in the back (I'm 5"11 and can stretch out completely). It's also large enough to transport bikes without removing wheels, two longboards plus one surfing buddy, or four climbers with full gear. The car has ~183,500 miles and several moderate scratches and dents on the outside, but it's in great mechanical shape. Bought it in 2013 from a mechanic who specializes in refurbishing old Subarus. Besides regular oil changes and tire rotations, I got all the parts that tend to wear out on old Subarus replaced: 142,000: New valve gaskets, spark plugs and spark plug wires ($600) 150,000: New battery ($120) 153,000: New timing belt, water pump, drive belt ($780) 156,000: New tires, lower ball joints (warranty until 4/2018), adjusted wheel alignment ($590) 171,000: New thermostat gasket ($100) 181,000: New front brake pads and rotors ($260), with 3 years warranty starting early November These parts normally live 80,000+ miles. Rear brake pads are at 50% (in spite of having >60,000 miles on them). Also got it regularly inspected and minor parts replaced as needed. Engine runs strong (easy to get to 85mph - never tried to go faster) and gets 29mpg on cross-country trips. The 2.2l Subarus have a reputation for durability and often last 300k miles or more (check e.g. this dealer: https://www.autoworldoffremont.com/1999_Subaru_Legacy_Fremont_CA_269761196.veh ). Smog checked, no leaks. I have documentation of most work done. The car has optical blemishes (moderate scratches and dents), but no body rust and nothing that affects function or safety. Also, it has three distinct keys (for the driver side door, the ignition, and the trunk), and the passenger side door can only be unlocked from inside. There's also a tiny chip in windshield, but it's stable (did not grow since I bought the car 4 years and 60,000 miles ago) and out of view when driving. Lastly, the AC is low on coolant, and the registration needs to be renewed soon. Overall, this car is great for outdoor adventures and road trips or as a workhorse. If you search Craigslist for similar offers and compare, you'll see old Subaru wagons like this one typically for around $2,000 but without the recent major service (i.e. you're likely to spend a good amount of money to replace older parts as they wear). I'm asking less because the car doesn't look good on the outside any more, has quirks like the different keys for different doors, and doesn't have luxury features: $1,600 OBO. Test drive possible in San Francisco (Mission District) or on Stanford Campus.
